I don't dislike Hollywood for its success. I dislike Hollywood because 95% of the films that come out of that Factory are derivative, unoriginal, boring, unexciting and lame. In other words, all round wholesome family entertainment! The good guys win, the bad guys lose!!! Always.

Your Mecca is a sad place where anything new or unheard of is looked down upon. If a film makes no money, its an assumed failure, even if its a great and wonderful film.

In fact, do you think that the masses even want to leave their comfort zone? I doubt it. So Hollywood is left triumphant once more.

We are all troublemakers in this forum. I think it has to do with the way we were brought up in our respective countries and the way we think about filmmaking. It also has to do with our reality and the way we percieve making films. That is the great thing about having so many inteligent and talented people putting their opinions up.

You know what... I think many would agree when I say that Foster Tyler or whatever is a fucking retard. How is fairyland these days? Are crack prices still low? Anyways, when are you going to realize that success in North America is determined by a dollar amount? I know it sucks, but it's reality. If you disagree, then take a look at where the big players are making their films... Canada and Australia. Canada has great locations, and very experienced and creative filmmakers (who work for little packs of sugar). Australia offers very low prices, virtually no taxes for filmmakers, and is like 50% desert. What money grabbing pig could ask for? Ah. Well. I am a money grabbing pig and can't wait to make Titanic 2.

I do believe that there is something of a revolution taking place in the film 'industry' at the moment - that film-makers are getting sick of recycling the same SHITE over and over and over and beginning to increasingly focus on more imaginative films - just look at the work of P.T Anderson or Spike Jonze. Sam Mendes I'm not TOO sure about as 'American Beauty' was one hell of a slick movie.

The Coen Brothers have been doing it for ages.
Jim Jarmusch is REALLY starting to be recognised as a legitimate big time player since 'Ghost Dog'

N Foster Tyler sounds to me like one of the most experienced people on this forum, and Im grateful he posts advice up, albeit sometimes pretty short tempered and to the point.

If you want to make money then there are easier ways to do it than by making movies.

By the way I have been to Australia, been to where they filmed most of Mad Max 3 (over 10 years ago) and the landscape still bears the scars from the cranes and dollys and lighting equipment that they used then.

Just thought I'd add that to the pot.

That, in a nutshell, is exactly what I've never understood about wannabe filmmakers who are in it solely for the glamour and the gold. There ARE much easier ways of making that money, getting that red porche, and having that lucsious blond on your arm and in your pants. Those who think that way are inevitably going to fail. Filmmaking is just too damn hard, with too many heartbreaking and painful moments attached, that if you do not truly love cinema, you will fail. You have to be prepared to give up everything.

If you don't have what it takes to get on the ride, don't buy a ticket.
